ePub eBook Version of Determination Available Free

I've gotten a number of requests for downloadable ebook versions of my work from people who are interested but don't want to read what I post on the site itself. One benefit of having gotten Determination up on Amazon is that now I have a nicely formatted eBook version of it, so for this story, I can make that happen.

The other main benefit is that having gone through the process once with Determination, I now know my way around the eBook creation process pretty well. I'll be working on getting more of my completed works converted into eBook format for release here and for eventual publication as well.

So why would I do this when Determination is now on Amazon and I could be encouraging you all to go buy it? The answer is here my my FAQ. (Besides, I can do that too!)

Determination Available Today (August 13) in US Amazon Kindle Store

Determination has been sent off to Amazon's publishing arm for review and publication. It cleared the review in about half an hour, which I'm taking as a good sign. If all goes well, it should be available on the US site in the morning some time. It should be available on international Amazon sites shortly afterward, in the next day or two.

I've priced it at 99 cents. Because it's so short, I honestly would've pushed it out for less, but that's as low as I could go with it. I didn't want to make it entirely free because, well, that's what this website is for.

Still, I worry that people will be upset with the length. I think it's a great story, but it's only 1,000 words. That's pretty short. So I also included a revised version of The Ship of the Unforgotten. It's intended more as an olive branch to anyone who might feel they didn't get enough for their money; hopefully it'll lead them back here to find the rest of what I've got. Then they can read whatever they want for nothing, and if they want to help me out by buying future releases, that's awesome.

Speaking of future releases, I'm really feeling like this is the time to focus on the whole eBook thing, so I'm going to keep writing daily and working on The Price of Entanglement, but I am dropping out of the official race to 50K for Camp NaNoWriMo August. NaNoWriMo itself in November is still a go though. I'm going to be putting most of my effort into reworking and expanding on The Ship of the Unforgotten as my next Kindle release, and hopefully other platforms, too.

It does turn out that being Canadian throws a few wrinkles into releasing on platforms other than Kindle, and even Kindle has a hiccup or two. It'll be a while until I can do Nook, and iTunes will take a short time as well. I have to set up American bank accounts and get a tax form and stuff. Fun fun fun.

Wish me luck, and please help out by buying the story if you want to help out, or spread the word; that's just as valuable, if not more!

Just About Set to Launch

It's taken a while, but I think I'm just about ready. I should be able to release Determination in the very near future as an ebook on the Amazon Kindle store, as a start, and since creating Kindle .mobi files involves creating ePub files at the same time, I can probably release to a variety of other ebook stores pretty much right after that.

Unfortunately it looks like another day has slipped past me in the process of getting this all ready, so no more story today. Tomorrow, I promise!

Another benefit of having all this ebook stuff sorted out is that I should very soon be able to offer them as downloads here, too. What formats are people interested in? Let me know in the comments!

NCX Tables of Contents Are a Pain

I really didn't know what I was getting into when I started looking at the table of contents for Determination. It turns out that the TOC is by far the most tricky part of the entire ebook creation process.

I'll confess I even wondered why I bothered at several points during the day; after all, Determination is quite a short story. But the TOC is required by Amazon, at least in theory, and I am committed to doing this professionally. I'm not going to half-ass it.

I found a resource that is immensely helpful for not only the TOC, but every element of creating an ePub/mobi ebook file. Check out this blog:

Huge thanks to them. As a direct result of reading that page, I now know how to create an ebook from the ground up, in detail, without any 3rd party software.

So now I have a working table of contents for Determination, which works perfectly well with the Kindle's position indicator at the bottom and all the navigation options and everything. It's pretty cool. But in the process of getting that right, I broke the cover image! Argh. And it's too late to fix now. It's also too late to write any more of The Price of Entanglement, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.
